Michael, We used a range of video hosting sites along with as much social networking exposure as we could get. We also contacted a few people in our industry who we thought would find the video relevant and pass it on.

As for things we discovered while experimenting:
-The video was too long - it should have been about 1min 30secs max
-It is essential to optimised keywords and descriptions for search
-Building up a list of video distribution sites prior to launch is recommended

It was a good learning experience for us and we found it really useful - it will really aid us in our next viral attempt.

Jamie, thanks for the update! I'm curious how you got the word out on the video besides Youtube. Once I watched your video, I tried searching Youtube and others and I was surprised to see that there was very little that came up with results. The majority of the descriptions didn't use keywords that would be searched for. Obviously creating viral content is not as simple as labeling it with tags of "viral content", but I'm curious what your findings were on how do you get the inital seed planted in various places giving the content the best chance for success. Shoot me a note or reply here if you are able to share.

Michael,

I'm glad you liked the video. We used it as a test piece to help us develop a viral marketing campaign for our clients. We learnt a lot from doing it and received a mixed reaction from viewers.
We've come to the conclusion that to make viral work people have to find it funny and want to pass it on, that's what will drive you traffic.

We're also playing with a new video that uncovers the dangers of paying to get to "number one on the Google!" check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUGGG9BOGjI
